Mt. Elgon National Park

01

Intro

Mount Elgon National Park, straddling the Uganda-Kenya border, is centered on an extinct volcano with Wagagai Peak (4,321m) as its highest point. Known for its vast caldera and unique caves, the park attracts trekkers and nature enthusiasts. It hosts 39 mammal species and over 300 bird species, including several East African endemics.

02

Wildlife

Mount Elgon’s wildlife includes forest elephants, buffalo, and antelopes like bushbuck and duiker, though they are elusive. Primates such as black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys are more commonly seen. The park’s birdlife features species like the Jackson’s francolin and black-collared apalis. Butterflies and rare plants, like the Elgon teak, thrive in its forests.

03

Scenary

Mount Elgon’s landscape includes montane forests, moorlands, and a massive 40km² caldera. The park’s caves, like Kitum and Makingeny, are formed by ancient lava flows. Waterfalls, hot springs, and dramatic cliffs enhance its beauty. The diverse altitudes (1,100–4,321m) support varied ecosystems, from bamboo forests to open grasslands.

Activities

Trekking to Wagagai Peak is the primary activity, with multi-day routes like Sipi and Sasa trails requiring permits. Day hikes explore caves, waterfalls, and hot springs. Birdwatching is rewarding, with guides for spotting endemics. Cultural visits to the Sipi community and coffee tours provide a glimpse into local Sabiny and Bagisu traditions.
